Sports is a universal language capable of uniting friends and foe. There is a great unifying spirit guarding the sports realm that creates peace even between archrivals. That same spirit has been consulted by the great people of Nigeria for peace and unity. In remembrance of our past Heroes, the Enugu State Government is hosting a sport event called “LEGENDS WRESTLE FOR NATIONAL UNITY FESTIVAL” on Friday and Saturday, the 9th and 10th of December 2016 at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium (The Cathedral), Enugu.
If you’ve never seen a wrestling match before, here’s your chance. You’ve seen one before? Come see one in Enugu. There will be entertainment from musicians actors and comedians. Headlining the event are Patience Ozokwor (MAMA G), 2face, Phyno, Olamide, AY, Gordons etc and some of the wrestlers to expect are Jay Batista, De Ultimate Commander and Shane Douglas. All will be present come 9th and 10th of December in Enugu.
Why Enugu? Regarded as the capital of Eastern Nigeria, it is known for its rich cultural heritage and is a place of peace and tourism. As far back as the 18th century, the people of Enugu often engaged in traditional wrestling known as “mgba” for entertainment and to showcase prowess amongst the youths.
Today it is coming back as a road to love, peace and unity. Secondarily, wrestling as a sport gives room for the youths to attain fame. In the words of Ike Ekweremmadu and Yakubu Gowon who are the vanguards “We believe that if we are able to develop sports, we would be able to create jobs to ensure that some people who do not have formal education and those who do not have the opportunity of achieving much in education can also gain prominence just as their counterparts in Europe, America and the rest of the world.”
“You do not need a university degree to be a good sports person… what you need is good skill and a conducive environment.”
